The 8th Annual UNC Tarheel Junior Championship @ UNC Finley Golf Course
presented by Tarheel Golf Foundation
March 18-19, 2017
First off, we would like to thank Eric Murray, Stuart Taylor, the players, parents, and rest of the staff for so graciously welcoming us and assisting us at the event. It was our first event that we have attended and we feel it was a huge success. We learned so much and had a blast attending it! Thank You!
The weekend started out on Saturday with cold and damp conditions. The greens were fast but, the conditions were good for some low scoring opportunities. It amazes me how much talent these kids have and how well they adapted to the golf course as the conditions changed throughout the weekend. Sunday provided lots of sunshine but also brought with it a lot of wind. This made the golf course play very difficult!
In the High School – Junior/Senior Division; Cam Barackman finished the first round one shot ahead of Patrick Carlin and three shots ahead of Zack Byers. Cam maintained his lead on Sunday and took 1st place overall, Patrick Carlin captured 2nd place, while Everette Whiten and Jimbo Stanley went on to tie for 3rd. We caught up with Patrick Carlin after round 1, you can check out the interview Here .
In the High School – Freshman/Sophmore Division; Akshay Bhatia fired a 72 – 71, -1 under par for the weekend and finished 8 shots ahead of 2nd place finisher – Drew Lanier. Peter Fountain went on to capture 3rd place just two shots behind Drew Lanier.
The Middle School division offered some outstanding golf from all players but, most notably was the -7 under par total from Abhay Gupta. Abhay played some phenomenal golf in very tough conditions on Sunday and had the lowest total score for the tournament. Jake Herring and Zach Adams also played some outstanding golf, finishing at -1 under par and Even, respectively. Jake Herring took 2nd place while Zach Adams finished 3rd place. We caught up with Zach Adams after the first round, you can check out his interview Here .
In the 11 and under division there was a total of 6 players, all of which played very well throughout the weekend in these tough conditions. After the first round, Tyler Jones was ahead of Daniel Boone by 4 strokes, while Mathew McCarthy was in 3rd, just 2 shots behind. Tyler Jones maintained his lead on Sunday and finished in 1st place with a final score of 7 over par. Daniel Boone went on to capture 2nd place and William Pohlman played two consistent rounds of 85-88 and took 3rd place.
Congratulations to all the players! You all played some outstanding golf and we look forward to seeing you at future events.
